The Southern Cross

Nickname: Crux

Crux is based off of the Southern Cross which is, (as I understand it) basically the southern equivalent of the northern star. Unlike the others he was born an earthbound pony. He parents were two of the original royal guards who served Princess Luna. Despite their insistence that Crux follow in their warrior hoof prints, he had a passion for science and avidly studied the stars. They eventually decided that it wasn’t a bad thing because they protected the princess of the night, and let it slide. When he got his cutie mark in astronomy they decided it was because he was meant to be one of the elite guard and upped his training. As a result he was the beefiest smarty pants ever. Although he did get in to one of the higher ranked units, he was a slacker, far more interested in staying in his quarters and understanding the passage of the heavens then training. Much to the irritation of his commanding officer.

One day there was a reviewing of the royal guard by the princesses. Unfortunately Princess Luna was absent. Princess Celestia claimed it was from fatigue as the review was to be held during the day. After the review was over Crux snuck away and took his usual path through the gardens to get back to his room. As he reached the center he overheard the princesses arguing and saw Princess Luna for the first time. They were arguing about Lunas absence at the review and how she had no interest in her few daytime duties. As he listened to the argument he was able to hear what Celestia couldn’t; that Luna was upset because no pony seemed to care about the night. Due to his own familial problems he was able to sympathize with the younger sister and after that began compiling a list of ponies that he knew enjoyed the night.

When he realized how slim the list was he began to go out more often to convince other ponies of the beauty of the night. During this time his own love of the night and subsequently his love for the princess grew. He decided to wait to take his list to Luna until he had at least 100 ponies on it, but by the time he reached around 47, she had reached her breaking point and became nightmare moon. Heartbroken, he wished on the evening star that he could do something, anything, for his princess. Eve heard his wish and after consulting with Polaris, the three of them descended. They offered to turn crux into a star pony so he could watch over her, and perhaps one day help her escape. He happily agreed and the three combined their power in a rarely used spel,l turning him into a star pony.

Crux rather enjoys being a star pony because he can now study the heavens from a much better standpoint. Although he does miss being able to guard Luna, he enjoys looking down and seeing her finally accepted. He still keeps his list and adds to it whenever he sees a pony genuinely enjoying the night. (it’s like, ten feet long now)
